Government Surplus Property Auctions and Land Sales -- A Free Online Guide
While the Federal Homestead Act is no longer in effect, you can still buy
(and sometimes trade for) land from the federal government. Both the BLM
and GSA agencies get involved with selling off surplus properties, from
time
to time. There may be a very nice piece of land right where you want to
live. Most BLM land sales are for parcels in the Western States. Alaska
public lands are not being offered at the present time by BLM. GSA sales
may occur anywhere in the United States.
The GSA usually auctions off developed properties, including old military
offices and bases. BLM manages the forests and other public lands, and
almost always sells raw, undeveloped land.
