The thing about aluminum is that it is very reactive like the 
other light metals.  However, the pure aluminum reacts with the 
oxygen in air to form a hard layer of aluminum oxide on the 
surface.  This layer is tight and does not allow additional 
oxidation to occur.  It is also very hard and nearly 
indistructable.  The hard oxide layer protects the aluminum from 
getting into the material in an aluminum container.  This is why 
the aluminum pots and pans are OK to use for cooking or storing 
such necessities as beer.
