Canadian pig culls and British hospital deaths.

by Pat Gardiner <pat.gardiner@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 30, 2008 at 02:33 PM

This is a very interesting snippet of information which ties in nicely
with the "Gardiner Hypothesis" explaining that the roots of the
current human superbug epidemics worldwide lie in an epidemic of PMWS
- Circovirus in Britain in 1999.

The Canadians admit to MRSA in both their pigs and ****k. They have
also long admitted to PMWS epidemics.

They knew that with the advent of "country of origin" labeling in the
US this Autumn, it would become increasingly difficult to ****p both
piglets across the border for fattening and all ****k and ****k
products.

There is little future in sick pigs with a declining ex****t market and
price. Expectations were and are low. They began a subsidised pig
cull:

"In mid-April the federal government introduced a national swine herd
reduction program to better balance supply and demand and help improve
live hog prices.

The cull Breeding Swine program offers 225 dollars per culled animal
to producers who agree to de-populate breeding barns and leave them
empty for three years. "

In the interim the US scientists, although not the government, found
and made public MRSA in pigs in the US, thus perhaps partly removing
the fear that the Canadians alone would be boycotted by supermarket
buyers and a suspicious American public. The stronger Canadian
producers have slightly changed tack, hoping to maintain their place
as "no worse than the US" for MRSA.

"In Manitoba we've actually been kind of slow to pick it up (the cull)
compared to some of the other provinces.

In total we have close to about 16 thousand animals that have been
applied for so that's just over four percent of our provincial herd. "

"Manitoba ****k Council re****ts hog operations with fewer than 300 head
make up the majority of those signing up for the federal Cull Breeding
Swine program, writes Bruce Cochrane."

However the smaller producers in Ontario where PMWS was and perhaps is
also at its worst are getting out.

"Other provinces, just to give you a sense, Ontario picked it up by
far the most with 45 thousand animals applied for and that's close to
11 percent of their herd."

(quotes from

There is the double problem of dealing with severe animal epidemics,
trying to retain consumer confidence and at the same time protecting
the hospitals.

The Dutch have done just that. Their pigs have MRSA, they have
admitted it for years and handled the situation well. The hospitals
are clear of associated human epidemics.

The Canadian's, especially Guelph University and newspapers like the
Hamilton Spectator, have been pretty straightforward too, but have
lacked the will to make the final connection and their hospitals have
suffered from the hesitation.

The US government have not done well, but the efforts of their
universities and some media have at least alerted a population not yet
taking the full force of superbug epidemics.

Britain, where this all began, has done disastrously. It is a mess and
a storm is gathering that will cause chaos.

It is sad that mishandling by Defra leaves a population often afraid
to go to hospital on the 60th anniversary of an institution that
almost all are proud of - the NHS National Health Service

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7475561.stm

"Picking up an infection is the public's main concern about hospital
care, a UK-wide BBC poll shows.

Of the 1,040 people quizzed, 40% listed the risk of potentially deadly
infections such as MRSA and Clostridium difficile as their top NHS
concern. "

Britain's vets really are going to have to own up to MRSA and probably
C.Diff and other infections in their sick pigs. The hospitals cannot be
protected until they do.
